Mediator Spotlight - Michael Notaro

February 2025

What drew you to become a mediator?

From my earliest memories, I've been drawn to resolving conflicts, whether it was taming bullies on the playground or restoring order in the classroom. My passion lies in helping disputants understand the root causes of their conflicts and guiding them towards mutually agreeable resolutions. Mediation, for me, is a powerful tool that offers support to individuals during their most challenging times.

Can you share a memorable mediation experience?

I'll never forget a particularly intense real estate mediation. By the end, there were tears, apologies, and, most importantly, a settlement. What struck me was when the commercial sublessor, to my surprise, expressed a willingness to welcome the tenant back if opportunities arose. This outcome would have been unlikely if the case had gone to trial. Mediation empowers parties to settle disputes in a way that fosters understanding and preserves relationships.

What qualities do you believe are essential for a mediator?

Effective mediators possess active listening skills, empathy, and the ability to grasp complex interpersonal dynamics. They must identify creative solutions and communicate effectively to navigate between the lines. Understanding the interests and values of all parties is crucial for guiding them towards a favorable settlement. Mediators should also think innovatively and facilitate constructive dialogue to resolve conflicts.

What do you think is the most common misconception people have about the mediation process?

A common misconception is that mediation signifies weakness. On the contrary, it demonstrates strength. Engaging in mediation shows a willingness to engage in constructive dialogue, find common ground, and work towards mutually beneficial outcomes. Mediation empowers participants to explore their interests, needs, and concerns, paving the way for creative solutions that address underlying issues.

What hobbies or interests do you have outside of mediation that complement your role as a mediator?

Outside of mediation, I am an avid swimmer, author, and public speaker (having served as Past President of Toastmasters International). My connection with water brings me solace and joy, particularly during long-distance swims. Additionally, I've authored a popular book titled "The Call of the Leader" and relish the opportunity to engage with readers, aiming to enhance their lives through my writing. As a public speaker, I thrive on the challenge of delivering ideas, information, or stories to diverse audiences in a compelling and engaging manner.
